MEDIA ARTICLES EXPLAIN DEMOLITION THREAT TO AND
PRESERVATION HOPE FOR JIMNA FIRE TOWER
1..FIRE TOWER FUN....Brisbane Courier
Mail...Village Green Editorial...13/9/08......Quote.."
The Jimna Fire Tower Action Group is soldiering on in
it's efforts to protect it's Queensland Heritage Council-Listed
fire tower that the State Government wants to bulldoze because
of maintenance costs. The group's latest angle is to plug for
the tower, inland from the Sunshine Coast, to be used like the
Gloucester Tree in WA. Not a bad idea but the trouble is the
Gloucester Tree does not need painting. It just sheds it's bark
every year" unquote.
JFTAG
COMMENT:- Redevelopment of the Jimna Fire
Tower into a self funded tourist attraction/destination would
pay for ongoing maintenance, including a paint job.
2..WHITE-ANT DEMOLITION......Brisbane
Courier Mail...Village Green Editorial...13/9/08..... Quote.."TERRIFIC to
see Heritage Minister Andrew McNamara forcing the owner of
heritage-listed Keating House at Indooroopilly to secure the
building so it is not damaged by weather and vandals. That issue
aside, we've heard developers joke about so-called demolition by
white ants where buildings in Brisbane City Council character
precincts are left to rot to the point an engineer's report
recommends their removal"...
Unquote.
JFTAG COMMENT:-
The Queensland Heritage Act has failed to protect the Heritage
Listed Jimna Fire Tower and is in urgent need of review.
3..TIMBER COST FURY GROWS.....Brisbane
Courier Mail...Page 9....22/9/08......Quote in main points..."Forestry
Plantations Queensland is accused of increasing prices of it's
plantation logs to unsustainable levels"........Timber
Queensland chief executive Rod McInnes said yesterday the logs
were already the most expensive in Australia"........"It
appeared the Government was struggling for revenue and had
pressed forestry to get as high a return as
possible"........"We're being price gouged by a monopoly
supplier-the Queensland Government". Unquote.
JFTAG COMMENT:- Forestry Plantations
Queensland (FPQ) saw the Jimna Fire Tower as excess to
requirements, however FPQ is now prepared to secure the tower in
preparation for transfer to a new owner.
STOP PRESS :- Somerset Regional Council has invited JFTAG to
